A Whiter, Brighter Smile

Teeth whitening is a quick way to restore the natural brightness to your smile if your teeth have become discoloured and dingy over time.

What is the cosmetic teeth whitening process like?

First, your dentist will determine whethercosmetic teeth whitening is a good fit for you, and what bleaching system would provide the best results.

At your first whitening appointment, impressions will be taken of your teeth, based on which we will fabricate a mouthguard appliance for you.

At your second appointment, you will be given your mouthguard, and your dental teeth bleaching materials.

You will receive detailed instructions on how to apply the gel and, and how long you need to use it each day.

Your lightweight mouthguard will be custom made for your mouth, and can be worn while you are awake or sleeping. The mouthguard is so thin you will even be able to talk and work while wearing it.

Most bleaching systems require approximately 10-14 days to achieve the desired result.

How does cosmetic teeth whitening work?

The active ingredient in most of our whitening agents is carbamide peroxide (CH4N202). When water comes into contact with this white crystal, the hydrogen peroxide works to lighten the teeth.

Is bleaching teeth safe? Are there any side effects?

Multiple studies over the past five years have proven that bleaching is safe and effective. Some patients may experience some gum or tooth sensitivity, but this will resolve itself when the treatment ends.

Is cosmetic teeth bleaching for you?

Generally, bleaching is successful in at least 90 percent of patients, though it may not be the right choice for everyone.

If your teeth are darkened from age, coffee/tea drinking, or smoking, then teeth bleaching will likely be a good choice for you.

In general, yellow, brown, or orange discolourations will respond better to bleaching than "grey" stains caused by fluorosis, smoking or tetracycline.

If your teeth are highly sensitive, or if you have periodontal disease or teeth with thin enamel, we may discourage bleaching and recommend porcelain veneers.

What are realistic expectations?

Dental teeth bleaching can only lighten the colour of your teeth, from gray to a lighter shade of gray, for example.

It does not change the colour of dental materials like resins, silicats or porcelains.

If you are having major restorative work done (such as implants, crowns, veneers, bridges), we recommend that you do a course of bleaching prior to having the work done, so that the restorative materials used can be match to the lighter, brighter colour of your teeth post-bleaching.

How long will my teeth stay white?

You can expect your results to last from one to five years. The longevity depends partly on your personal habits, such the frequency with which you drink coffee and tea.

With our cosmetic teeth bleaching kits, you will likely have at least one vial of bleaching gel left over from your initial course of bleaching. You can use this to "touch up" your smile down the road.

If you drink a lot of tea or coffee, you may have to do touch-ups more frequently, perhaps every six months or so.

You can continue using your custom mouthguard and buy vials of bleaching gel as required you require them.

Re-treatment takes far less time than the original treatment. Often, it only takes 2-3 applications to restore the desired level of whiteness.
